Let's Do Lunch
Childhood obesity is rapidly becoming a major health concern in Australia and thus this resource has been developed to address the need to encourage healthy eating by students.
Focuses on Materials and Technology Process knowledge, skills and understandings in the Middle Childhood phase of development.
The student is asked to create a healthy sandwich for another student that meets his or her needs, and in doing so will investigate various factors, such as personal likes and dislikes, medical conditions or cultural influences that affect healthy eating.
Next, students will devise an ingredients list and a sandwich recipe that will meet the needs of classmates, while also considering time and budget constraints. They will first write a procedure that outlines the steps to be taken and then follow it to produce a lunch for a friend. Finally, each student will evaluate the process they undertook to meet the challenge. Their classmate will also evaluate the sandwich.
The Technology Process Outcome is addressed in conjunction with the Materials Outcome in developing this learning package. Students will be encouraged to revisit the elements of the Technology Process as required. Activities outlined throughout the resource can be changed to suit student needs, or further activities can be added to enhance the program.
This resource can be delivered on a weekly basis, or integrated with other learning areas over a shorter time period. When students write up the procedure for making their sandwiches, this can occur, for example, during Writing instead of Technology and Enterprise classes.
This resource complements the Department of Education and Training's Healthy Food and Drink website, which is part of the Australian Better Health Initiative. Visit the website for resources and information.
