Imagination Island
Students create an island in the Indian Ocean. They locate landforms and settlements, decide on land use patterns, devise a treaty and develop sustainable lifestyles for the people of ‘Imagination Island’. Students experiment with the creation of new environments and make informed decisions from a range of options.

Students demonstrate understandings of the three aspects of the Place and Space Outcome: Features of places, People and places and Care of places; the Natural systems aspect of the Natural and Social Systems Outcome and the Ecological sustainability and Social justice aspects of the Active Citizenship Outcome. Investigation, Communication and Participation (ICP) processes will be used to conduct investigations.
The Ecological sustainability aspect includes four dimensions: natural, economic, social and political. Students will be provided with an opportunity to explore these aspects as they create their island. Natural sustainability incorporates all living things, resources and life support systems. Economic sustainability incorporates jobs and income. Social sustainability incorporates people living together and political sustainability includes policy and decision-making. The students will recognise the relationships between these four dimensions and be aware of the need for natural resources and life-support systems to sustain all life, skills to earn a living, social harmony and involvement in the decisions that affect people’s lives. The principles of conservation, peace, equality, human rights, appropriate development and democracy underpin the dimensions of sustainability and should be reflected in students’ development of their island.
Students will also be provided with opportunities to demonstrate social justice values and principles as they develop their island. This will be evident in their collaborative decision-making, group work and the equitable, fair, just, respectful and culturally sensitive approach to the design of their resort.
